Default Mercury 5 HP 2-cycle outboard drive shaft advice needed ...

Hi there, This is my first post on the forum. I need to take the drive shaft out of my 5HP Merc 2-cycle single cylinder motor to grease the ends of the shaft. Is there anything tricky about this? Has some one already posted on this and could you direct me to their advice? Thanks in advance. Ged

Wich ends? lol

Seriously, the bottom end of the driveshaft (in the gearcase) do not need grease but oil, wich is filled by the two screws on the gearcase. The splines of the upper end (that fit in the crankcase) may be lightly coated with grease, but you'll need to remove the lower unit. It's also a good time to change the impeller.

Best investment you can do is getting at least a generic manual (i.e. Seloc, Clymer) covering your engine. You'll learn a lot about your engine, and it's fun (ok, sometimes it's not...).

Yeah, i have both for my engine. Generic ones sure covers a wide range of models/years and are a bit less precise on some specific details but are more than enough for general maintenance (i.e. carbs, w/p...). If you plan to really dig into it (powerhead...) get the factory service manual.
