So i bought a sailboat with a 7.5 HP Merc that died, and I have a 4.5 Merc (serial # 4419574) from an older sailboat I am going to have to press back into service. I set up a trashcan today to test-run it, and it started up (after 2 years) on the 2nd try. Went into gear fine as well. It did smoke a good bit , which i assume is just from running again for the first time in awhile.
Most importantly i did NOT notice a stream of water I remember used to shoot out of the back of the motor. Did this come from the middle in the back (where it seems like exhaust/smoke was spraying out) or from somewhere else? Will it begin to circulate water after running in gear for longer, or when it's actually moving forward (or back) as opposed to attached to a motor mount in a trashcan?
Do I have a problem that could damage the motor if i keep running it or am I safe to take it out on the water?
