I have a 76 mercury 40 horse power and it will not hit reverse. When pulling lever into reverse you hear a small grinding noise and then it hits foward gear again. Anyone have any suggestions on this please let me know.

was your water pump done recently? sounds like it wasn't all the way in forward when lower unit put back on. if not then shift cable probably needs an adjustment
