Ok fellas,
Any help here would be fantastic! I purchased a 1994 Tracker Marine Nitro 180 FS with a 150 Merc Xri. If this sounds familiar, I want to apologize to you. I asked a friend (teamloud) to do some research on my issue and he thought it would help if he posted on this forum assuming ownership of the boat. I would like to sincerely apologize for his ignorance. I, personally, don't take advantage of people who care and want to help others. He jumped the gun and I hope he didn't ruin, for me, the respect and willingness to help from the highly regarded boat mechanics on this site! once again I apologize for his ignorance. SO here we go!
I bought this boat assuming it was in running condition. The first time i took it out, it didn't seem to be all there. Please keep in mind this is the first outboard motor i have driven, worked on and owned. When i put it in gear, it went in and would respond to throttle until about 2000 rpm, then it would choke and chug and die out. Sometimes, if i just slammed the throttle, it would take off and plane and run about 30 mph at WOT for about 2 minutes and then would gradually lose power until we stopped altogether. I pulled the boat out and checked the plugs. They were black! so i thought hey, i'll just change the plugs and be good. After i changed the plugs it was doing the same thing. I smelled the gas and it smelled old so i syphoned it all out and filled it up with 91 octane BP. I let it idle on land enough to run about 4 gallons through off and on. Took it out did the same thing. I hooked up a different gas tank and ran about 4 gallons of 91 octane and Gumout Injector cleaner through at idle around the lake. That still didnt' help. At this point i'm ready to drop some money it so i changed the plugs again, the wires, the fuel/water separator and checked the compression. They were running at 135 to 138 PSI in each cylinder. I checked every wire for tightness and had to tighten 2 connections. Then I checked all the spark plugs for spark and at idle, they were all sparking. I didn't check in gear because i wasn't sure if that would mess anything up. This STILL didn't fix the problem. I have been told that the fuel pump might be bad, but i wanted to run that by you guys and apologize for my friends post(s). I also read on here that injectors get clogged and don't let fuel by and that taking them out to clean them is a very costly adventure. If anybody has any insight or a direction for me to go, please let me know and I will be eternally grateful for any information/suggestions. Thanks
