I've got a 1967 80hp Evinrude which doesn't have any spark. The coil on the back of the motor looks just like a universal automotive coil. I don't think the one that was on it is the original. I replaced it with another $20 universal automotive coil and it had spark for a little bit but it doesn't now and the coil is pretty warm, not sure if thats normal. The coil from a boat dealer for that motor is about $95.

The question is... is there a differance between coils? Do I need to buy the expensive one or does that matter.

Thanks in advance for any help in this matter.

I believe there is a resistance wire molded into the instrument cable for the correct coil. I know it's there on a '66 anyway. So if your car coil is supposed to run on full 12 volts, you are not getting that through the resistance wire.
