Engine runs for a few minutes, but wont stay running smooth then just dies. All I have done is replaced the hoses and plugs. Is this engine worth fixing? Or should i just junk it and buy a new outboard?

it's a 1961 5hp, the basic same engine as the johnson/evinrude, different paint, & cover. if it has good compression yes it can be revived very easily. carbs, are simple and probably need cleaning and rebuilt. remove the inspection plate on the fly wheel and rotate it and inspect the points and coils. all maintainance parts are available at laingsoutboards.com.

Check your coils. They could be bad. If they are cracked/bad replace the entire ignition including plug wires and boots. Rebuild the carb, change the water pump impeller and enjoy your outboard for another 45 years.

Also, check the compression.

Ok Guys im going to attempt to get this thing running..Ive looked down into the points and they look o.k I'm guessing the coils are in the reddish plastic cover cant really tell if they are bad...But i cant seem to get the top cover off i did break the bolt loose but i cant seem to pull it off.. Do you need a puller to get the top part off?

You should use a flywheel or harmonic balancer puller. Someone might say to use a hammer and a big screw driver, but I'm not one of them.

Sounds like they could be the original coils. At $20/coil I'd replace them.

You need a vibration damper puller from the auto parts store, and three 1/4-20 Grade-8 bolts. Don't use lesser bolts, they will break. Screw them in the flywheel 7/16", no more and no less. Don't be timid, pull like crazy and it will pop off suddenly. You also need a torque wrench and a strap wrench to put it back on. Torque the nut to 40-45 foot lbs. If replacing the coils, slide them back and forth till the edges of the laminated cores are flush with the machined bosses where they sit. Gap the points to .020" at their widest opening.
