I have a 9.9 evinrude 78 outboard that starts, idels and runs great. The problems is that when its running wide open for say15-20 minutes,it losses the gear and the rpms just shoot up.The tiller dosent let me throttle down while this is happening and the shifter looks like it returned itself to neutral. It happened three times yesterday.I checked the lower unit oil and it was milky and sort of thick but no shavings or broken teeth. It has never felt like theres been any grinding. So im kinda confused as to say weather the lower unit is done in or it could just be a linkage problem in the shifter. All knowledge will be appreciated.

it sounds like the clutch dog in the lower is going. it can be replaced, with a rebuild. the gears are very square with sharp edges, when the get worn, they slip and come out of gear. the throttle not responding, is probably because it is slipping out of gear, and throwing the neutral rev limiter, against the timing plate jamming it. not allowing you to turn the throttle. you did change the oil.
