there was a change in the 70's that require 2 different lowers,, and shift linkage, sounds like you got the wrong one. what is the model number of your motor.?

question are the main shift bellcrank arm under the carburetors and the shift bellcrank bolted on the side of the block (nested with the throttle linkage bellcrank), plus all the related, attached connection arms and linkages. I swapped one of these a few years ago and it worked fine... It did require removing the powerhead, though, as the bellcrank under the carbs wouldn't come out without it... Not a difficult job - took about 2 hours.

yep, 73 to 77 are the reverse of 78 and newer. 73 to 77 where shift assist. you would have to change out the complete linkage.

I am having the same problem with my evinrude 70 3 cyl. is this the same lower unit? If so I can check my motor and see if we could trade something out to make both units work.
