I just bought this boat/motor combination, been sitting 5 years. I rebuilt the fuel pump, ordered a thermostat and spring (missing), and got a water pump kit, pricey little devil @ $69.90 !!!! The old pump housing was pretty pitted and the impeller had a slight set to it. So i dropped the lower leg, and down comes this brass collar just below the splines on the drive shaft. Now I know from my reading that this is the spline seal retainer. I tapped it off, since it seemed a press fit, and rebuilt the pump. The only problem is that I don't know how far down the shaft I need to tap this on, since I neglected to measure before taking it off. I know it was just below the splines, but don't know how far. Does anyone have a measurement or trick for getting this back in the right spot ?? It seems like a pretty tight press fit, so I don't know if it will return to the right spot just by installing the lower unit. Can anyone help ?? Thanks.
