Have you tried adjusting the idle mixture knobs on the carb? Get them as lean (clockwise) as you can without sneezing or stalling. One side of the carb supplies one bank of cylinders and the other side supplies the other bank.

Sounds like the gaskets are shot on the spark plugs. Haven't seen the gaskets sold separately for many moons.

Don't expect the smoke to go away. It never will. That is a smoky motor, always has been and always will be. However, you can cut way down on the smoke by switching to 100% synthetic TC-W3 outboard oil. Also, getting it out on the water and running the socks off it helps to get it cleared out.

New plugs. Gaskets come pre-installed on them. Unless you have serious blow-by there, I wouldn't be all that concerned. Don't overtighten the plugs in an effort to seal them and strip out the threads in the head.
