New here and just aquired a Johnson 10hp 1958 model. I was looking for a place to purchase factory color paint to repaint the motor and also a parts breakdown or refurbe book on this motor. It was in storage for two years and started after 2 pulls. I would love to refurbe this motor and keep it on a little 14 ft boat I have. Trying to keep the old motor in service and looking new.

You can get paint from Peter at North York Marine. It is top quality paint. As for the parts manual, I buy mine on eBay. Usually get them for about $10. I'll check my files, but I think I just bought a parts manual for that motor (I have one too). If I did, I will email you a copy.

You're in luck. I have a copy of the parts manual for your motor in pdf format. PM your email address and I'll send it to you.

Would the 1958 and 1959 motors be the same? I have a 1959 Seahorse 10 that I need to do some work on, coils I think.

I just picked up a Johnson seahorse 10 (1958) and know nothing about motors. It looks as though there's a battery plug on it, is it necessary or an option? Also can I get a copy of that manual as well.

Thanks

Gerald

If there's a battery plug on it then it is the 18hp as the 10's were never electric start or anything electric.

The 1958 and 1959 outboards are virtually identical.

I dont know how similar they are mechanically as I only have the '58 but the cowlings are sure really different! The '58 is the last of the great metal cowlings. The '59 is an ugly fibreglass hood.

I'm not sure it's a plug, has 3 prongs sticking out of it. I don't see any button for electric ignition and the code is QD-19. It also says Seahorse 10 on it, could it be a different cowl? Maybe I'm missing it, where would the electric start button be? I see the pull cord, high/lean dial, high/low spped, and choke on the front. looks like a '57 chevy. Like I said I know nothing about outboards, my father in law's only has pull start, no batt connection. although his is mid 90's.

Yep, you've got a '58 10 horse. But, that 3-prong thing you see can be nothing else than the fuel line connector. You need an old-style pressure tank with the 2-line hose and 3-prong connector on it to run it. You should be prepared to spend about 200 to 250 bucks to get a used pressure tank and coils/water pump stuff which is commonly in bad shape on those. However, they're beautiful motors and if your lower unit gears and bushings are good, you can probably get it running like new. The compression is almost always good enough to get them to run nicely and with a little work and a little dough you can have a really reliable motor for a fraction of the cost of a new one. Start a new thread if you need any help on it; everybody would be glad to help you get it running!:)
good luck,
JBJ

Not. The pressure tanks were only made in 4 gallon and 6 gallon. I don't know what you are contemplating buying but keep your wallet in your pocket till you are sure of what you are doing.
