Chrysler 45hp linkage question

I am waiting for my manual to come in the mail - in the meantime, I am stumped on the throttle and shift linkages. Although the remote control levers provide for throttle only operation (when starting) I cant figure out how to advance the throttle in neutral - it appears that the linkage only allows idle throttle when in neutral. I must be doing something wrong...

You are correct. In neutral you have very little throttle control. Force motors have the ability to go into fast idle where you can not do that at least with older chrysler motors. My 45 HP is just as you described it.

Thanks for the quick reply, at least I am not doing something wrong. I am used to OMC. Anyhow, I am surprised that you cant give it a 'high idle' when starting cold. Why does the remote control have a throttle-only setting with the little knob?

So far I can only get this old girl to pop and sputter. I am sure the carb will need complete cleaning.

When in forward gear you should be able to run through the entire throttle setting. Verify that you can prime the bulb so it is hard, and while starting push the key in to choke it. If motor sounds like it is trying to die give it a quick shot of choke until it smooths out. These are not the best idleing motors. The low speed circuits on the carb will probably need to be cleaned out. Best to buy a carb kit 18-7037 and a fuel pump kit 18-7806. Iboats sells these and so does NAPA. Go to a L82C spark plug and that is where I would start. Good luck.

Most of those engines came with a spring loaded connector on the throttle engine end. This is about twice as long as the shift quick connect end. The spring loaded portion should be pulled out about 1/4 inch when in neutral. The interlock will only allow a few degrees timing advance and will only crack the throttle open in fast idle. This is enough to give 1500-2000 RPM at start and warm up. Some engines have a screw on the interlock arm to adjust this. If you do not have the spring loaded connector the cables will work, only not quite as well. Later Force engines cheapened it and got rid of the spring loaded connector, replacing it with a plain but longer than the shift cable connector.

Well this may get me kicked off the island, but I simply cut off the little tab on the shift arm (on the side of the engine) which prevented the throttle movement in neutral. Now it works like my OMCs- unlimited throttle travel in neutral. I wont over rev it, promise. Anyhow, with a bit more throttle it started instantly and with quick carb cleaning (I will still buy the kit) it idled quite well.

Still waiting on my manual, but how hard is the impeller replacement? My mechanic offered to do it for about 100 bucks plus part cost; dont know if it worth my frustration to pay him to do it?

I have never taken apart the leg of any of my outboards.....but maybe it is time to start?

Depends on the model number. Older ones you have to remove the 6 screws on the motor leg. Remove all the bolts except one that holds the lower unit to the motor leg. loosen last bolt and adjust the 2 inch long nut in the motor leg till the shift linkages separate from the motor leg then remove that last bolt. Remove the three or four screws going into the water pump and toss old impeller. Reverse process with new impeller. Push impeller down onto impeller key. push water pump down onto impeller. Slowly turn drive shaft clockwise while pushing water pump down till it seats. Reverse above instructions. Hardest part is getting the shift nut readjusted however that is not tough. I can do the whole thing in about an hour. First time about 4 hours with the manual. Impeller depending on which one you get will be between 14 dollars and 30 dollars.
