I recently purchased a 1984 Sea Ray Seville 5.0BR (17 foot) with a 2.5L Merc 120hp and a Mercruiser Type 1 outdrive (I believe that is what they were called) and have two seperate questions:
1. What kinds of things should I be looking at doing as far as a tune-up goes? Looking on Overton's website I noticed there is a "tune-up kit" which is bascially just a new cap and rotor. I should also probably replace the spark plugs and wires. Is there anything else that would be a good idea as far as a tune-up goes?
2. My second question relates to getting more power into the boat. 120hp in a 17 foot boat seems a little weak to me. Is there anything easy I can do to the existing engine to give it a little more pep or at least make it run at it's best? If not are there any simple, easy "engine swaps" to get a little more power, ie. dropping in a 140hp 3.0L Merc? I would imagine going to a 4.3L would take way too much effort to be worth it (if not please correct me), but is the 2.5L 120hp to 3.0L 140hp a quick and easy change? I understand that I didn't buy a race boat, but who wouldn't like a little more power. I know I need to do something about the prop, it's certainly not helping power at the moment as it's pretty beat up and I've read through lots of posts with people trying to go from OMC to Merc or 4cyl to 8cyl or whatever and everybody's advice to them to forget about it, but I'm just wondering if a Merc for Merc 4-cyl swap for the 20 hp is an easy and relatively painless thing to do.
Thanks in advance for your replies.
