Does anyone know the weight diffrence between 1977 inline 6 115 hp and a 1996 black max 175 hp. I don't need axact numbers . I have a 19 foot j craft ski boat with a 115 hp and am thinking about switching motors to the 175. I know tho motor looks bigger but is it really heavy conpared to the old inline 6? and is this 175hp with carbs a good choice?, are they considered a good motor?

thanks, any advice would be great.

Re: need info/help

The 1977 115 Merc. has a dry weight of right at 300 lbs. the 1996 175 varies between 390 and 408 lbs depending on the exact model. This information can be found of all places at the NADA pricing guide website. You just look up the engine in question and as part of the information given is the weight. Hope this helps out...

Thanks guys for the info, I guess the extra 100 lbs or so, is well worth the extra power.

Thanks guys for the info, I guess the extra 100 lbs or so, is well worth the extra power.

The 1977 i6 is 115 at the crank, and the weight quoted assumes you have power trim, (dry weight wo power trim is about 270 lbs) and the 175 is rated at the prop, and has 22 more cubic inches that generates the greater power. I hope your boat is rated for the extra power and the transom is in good shape. I wrap transoms on my older boats with 3/16 thick welded aluminum, (the transoms are sound prior to the extra reinforcing). WOT running both engines the fuel consumption of the 175 will be much more. The 115 should be about 11.5 gal per hour and the 175 17.5 gal per hour (rough guess). The larger motor may be able to cruise easier then the 115 which could help your fuel and engine life considerations. In general you want the most power the boat is rated for, but don't overdo it, if the hull is not rated for that much power or the boat is weak. Hope this helps. JR
