Hello, I bought a 1963 5.5 hp Evinrude fisherman. Armed with a little info, from past post here; I have managed to tear the thing completly down. I have changed the Impeller, rebuilt the carb and cleaned everything up. All while waiting on a manual to get here in the mail. It came today, however it was the wrong one. When I removed the lower unit, the spring / gasket / washer / ruber ring / and coupler thing went flying. I know I can't be the first person this has happend to, lol. So, can someone tell me what order these go back in ? So far I have been able to do about everything from seaching past post on here, but have had no luck with this one. Kudos to all of you, that help keep these old outboards on the water, and guys like me from going bald!

From the bottom up...

Roll pin, brass cup, spring, carbon seal (spring fits inside) o-ring (fits inside top of carbon seal), brass washer (ridge facing up) and then the cork gasket. Put a little lube on the cork seal.

Wow! that was fast. Thank you wbeaton. When you say Carbon seal, I assume you are refering to the half inch rubber cup thing. I did not find a o-ring ? I will go out in the morning and see if it can be found.

Yes, the carbon seal looks/feels like hard plastic. The o-ring part number is303347. You can get it at your OMC dealer. Replace it if its hard or cracked.

Ok, I went out this morning and looked for the o-ring. Found it still in the Carbon seal. It looked to be in pretty good condition. I went ahead and got a new cork gasket though. It was worn out good. I put the head back on, and drug it down to the lake. It ran "almost" like a new motor. After messing with the carb., It was running like a champ! Then at full throtle every couple minutes or so it would cut out a little. I would let off the throtle, and gun it. Then it would, take right off agian. Any Idea's on this ? This is the first outbourd I have ever worked on, so I'm kinda green at this. Thanks for the great advice.

first thing to check is the condition of the coils. Since you didn't mention changing them I wonder if they are the original coils/condensers. If so, they could be your problem and need to be changed. Take off the recoil and the inspection plate on the flywheel and take a look inside. If you see white powdery and/or cracked coils they need to come out.

Also, make sure the vent is open on your tank. Could be you still have some junk in the carb. Check these things and if you are still having trouble re-post as a new thread. This one will get buried fast.

Ok, I went to the lake again today. The problem seems to have fixed itself. I ran it wide open all over the lake, and it did not cut out once. I will check the coils though, just in case. Thanks again!
