I would appreciate hearing if there are some options for repairing the cylinder head on a 75 hp 1977 Evinrude. The Evinrude blew out a spark plug for the second time. The first time was over 12 years ago, which is how long I have owned the motor. At that time the head was tapped and redrilled and a spacer used to accomodate the OEM plug. The second time was last week. The mechanic said the head was in very good shape other than that. I raised question about using an 18mm plug that was compatible with OEM plugs, but that was ruled out. I suggested using JB Weld, but that was ruled out. I even said that I though it might be able to be tack welded, but that was ruled out. Unfortunately, there were no options at the time, other than trying to find a used head. Appreciate any advice or help. WES

Mindbender, There are helicoil and solid inserts for this purpose. I think the solid inserts are superior to the helicoils, especially for spark plugs that you will be removing periodically. You need to remove the head, drill and tap the hole to the correct size. Now I like to clean the threads and put some epoxy on the insert and install it.

Hopefully this avenue is available to you.
