Sounds like a problem with the regulator/rectifier..should see 2 yellow wires/2 red wires/ gray wire/ and a black ground. Check all these connections first- sometimes one of the bullet connectors disconnects or corrodes. If your battery is charged, start it up, check your voltmeter, should be producing around 14.5 volts when running with some throttle. If it isn't and the wires are all o.k., then I suspect you may need a new voltage regulator (around $100 but takes about 10 minutes to change it out). Accidently crossing the +/- terminals on the battery one time is all it takes to burn out a regulator..
