Hi all, I know this forum doesn't exactly cover Elto but figured I'd give it a try (same builder sorta). I just got in a 1955 5hp 5D11E Elto engine and the lower unit looks very close (exact?) to my late 50's Evinrude 5.5's. Does anyone know if they are a direct swap or even if the gears or any parts inside will swap? I know, I should try AOMCI which I will try also if nobody knows. thx.

Re: Elto / Evinrude parts swap.

I recently learned that Elto is Canada's Gale. So going by my knowledge of Gale, I would say Yes. Gale used a lot of internal parts and assemblies that Johnson/Evinrude used. The main differences were the large castings that could be produced locally more cheaply and not have to be shipped which helped keep costs down considerably. Even with locally-made castings, dimensions such as bolt patterns were made in common. That way they could bolt a complete common gearcase to the locally-cast midsection.
