I told a friend I would replace the water pump in his gen. 1 alpha. I see that there are differences between the pre-load pin and non-preload Gen. 1's. His is an '87 with original outdrive. Is there any way to tell which one he has other than taking it apart? I don't have room in the drive for another boat so I want to have the parts here ahead of time and since it has never been replaced I would want to get the full kit.

If it is truly an '87, it wont have a preload pin.....
Those were much earlier......;)

If I can remember right, Merc has 2 kits, an upper housing kit & a base kit. Aftermarket ones may have all the parts in one kit. There are extra gaskets in the kits - make sure you note which ones are there when you disassemble & only replace the ones that were there. Have fun!

I'm sure it is an '87 as my dad owned it before him. It is a 'hanger queen' and that's how it has gone this long on original impellor. He told me it is getting warm while idling and when I asked him how long since he had the impellor changed he said never. Thanks for the help!
