I didnt have tilt/trim so i bought a trim motor and im having trouble installing. The motor has a blue and green wire. And the switch has blue, green and red wire. The guy that sold it to me said that the red was positive blue was for up,and green for down.He told me to run red wire from the switch to pos terminal, green to green and blue to blue then ground them.Does that meen ground to neg trem or just to metal.Because i grounded to neg trem and push button it started getting real hot an melt wire, when i grounded to metal nothing happend at all.To see if motor worked i put blue on pos green on neg, motor went up then vise versa motor went down. So please help by explaining how to hookup. Thanks

Re: how to hookup trim system switch

Hi clayton, welcome to iboats.

Please start by telling us what model, year, and brand of motor you have.

You will need a wiring harness with 2 relays wired into it.

The system is set up so that the power goes from your battery to the switch via the red wire (should have a 20 amp fuse).
From the switch, it goes to the relay, then to the trim motor on either the blue or green wire.
The other wire acts as the ground.

The current has to go through the trim motor before reaching the ground, or you just end up with unlimited current flow, and then a fire.

If you enable the "private messages" feature on the forum, and send me a message, I will try to give you more info.

Re: how to hookup trim system switch

just curious...

why is a fuse NOT called for on the positive wire in the "standard three wire motor wiring?"

I only ask because I just got a tilt/trim of this model today and I was surprised to see it had no fuse. I generally like using fuses because they tend to save parts when things happen.

any insight?

It doesn't call for a fuse because in the two wire with relay system, the switch is only carrying signal voltage--not 20-30 amps. In the newer systems the relays are powered through a 30 amp circuit breaker. If it makes you feel better, try a small fuse to power the switch --5 amp should be enough

Re: how to hookup trim system switch

the standard 2w doesn't mention fusing because the control switch is usually powered off of the fuse panel. It could be connected to an existing circuit or have a new one added. I was afraid that if I put in a fuse with an amperage then I would have to answer questions about whether or not it is okay to use the xxx circuit because it has a yyy rated fuse. In reality it just doesn't matter too much. Any of the smaller fuses in the fuse panel will be good enough to protect against shorts.

3w systems usually have the switch built into the throttle handle and the factory fusing is inescapable. If you have no system at all and are going to add one, then get the 2w. It's a better system.
