No speed

Good morning, I have recently purchased a 1972 Renkin Bow Rider with a 50hp Evinrude. The past owner hadn't had the boat in the water for the last 5 years, but installed a new water pump. I finally got the engine to idle well, but when in gear, the boat won't get up to speed. The engine bogs down a little as the throttle is moved forward, then picks up a little speed (not much) as I move past that point. If the throttle is pushed all the way forward the engine sounds as if it will choke itself out. I first checked the fuel filter, (which isn't more that a little screen and cork gasket). I don't know what could be wrong there. Any suggestions on where to start? I'm mechanically inclined, Motorcycles, PWC's and cars, but this old boat engine stuff is new to me. Thanks in advance for any help.

i would pull the carbs and take them apart clean them real good and then put new kits in them. u could start with that if the boat set that long u may have gummed up carbs b-12 chem tool works good just clean them and then use air to blow every thing out ( 20 p.s.i. )

I contacted the old owner and he swears that he did the carbs last winter, and is trying to locate the receipts. If that is the case, any other suggenstions?

if he had the carbs rebuilt i would still take them apart and clean them if you still have the prob the carbs will not be the prob and u can go to the next step i am dont know much about the 50 horse but u may have a prob with the timing advance but like i said i am not sure about that motor what year is it and i will look to see if it is in one of my books

johnnyboy, the carbs could have been done, but were they done right? who did them, the neighbor that works on lawnmowers. if the high speed jets were not pulled, and often not. they are partially clogged, thus not giving the engine the fuel it needs. also gas sitting in the carb over the winter evaporates and leaves residue in the carbs. i have a 69 & 71 50hp and a 88 90hp plus several others. clean and rebuild the carbs, use seafoam in your gas/oil mix, and they should not have to be cleaned again for years.
