Default Mariner 90hp flywheel/starter problems

Hi I have a 1996 Mariner 90hp and recently put a new block on it , I replaced the flywheel because the teeth were worn. Now having big problems, when I fit the flywheel and turn it by hand intitially its fine no sounds of skiffing or rubbing but on turning using the starter one of the magnets on the flywheel breaks up, I think its hitting the stator pack. I'm on my second flywheel. The other problem is that I just cannot get the startet teeth to fully engage with the flywheel.....any ideas? Our local dealer is perplexed.
Over here in Scotland the parts are horrendous its $800 for a flywheel.

Could it be the wrong block i've been sold or anything as simple as that??

Was the stator seated down well on the upper main bearing block before the engine was turned over, if it was before a repeat take the stator off the engine and make sure of the clearance in the new flywheel. The bendix gear does not fully engage the flywheel gear, it only goes about half way up the teeth on the flywheel. Bob

Hi Bob thanks for that I will have a good look at the stator. Re the starter whats happening is that the bendix teeth are not fully entering the cut outs for the teeth on the ring gear of the flywheel, it as if the starter need to be pushed closer to the engine block but you cant......was not a problem before the new block was fitted
