Default 1990 40hp Evinrude Carb And Power Loss

Last Year I had carb problems, no high speed until I pushed the prime button, so I pulled them apart and cleaned the jets and all ports with spray carb cleaner. When I went out to run it, it was a little better at first but still couldn't get it to plane out. As I was going back to the launch, all of a sudden it just took off. Good speed and everything, so I figured the cleaning dislodged something and it finely opened up. I thought is was running fine until I went to pull my kid on a tube with it. It would usually snap them right up, but now it acts like it did before I cleaned the carbs, no power, and will not get up to speed. Without pulling anyone it seems to be running good. What do you guys think? I didn't put a carb kit in there because the parts shop said I was wasting my money. Should I pull the carbs apart and soak them then spray them out? I don't even know if it was the carbs the way it was doggy right after I cleaned them and then all of a sudden it took off. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Have you checked to see if your battery is supplying enough juice? Checked the battery connections at the battery and on the motor? There could also be some left over junk from when you cleaned your carbs. Is the motor overheating at all? Have you done a compression test?
Try cleaning all the coils and block where they ground to the block.GL

I hav'nt checked the connections this year, but I know I did last year and that didn't change anything, although it would be a cheaper and easier fix problem to have. The motor isn't overheating, and no I havn't done a compression check, too afraid to. If the compression was bad, that would be to much jing to fix for me to have a boat for awhile. So we don't want to think about that one. I'll try and clean the coil connections and hope for the best.

Once the engine starts, the battery has nothing to do with anything as the stator is providing the current to run the motor. You said the engine seems to run good -- well, if it has no power it isn't running good. Check for spark on both cylinders. I suspect you have an ignition problem and the engine is dropping a cylinder.

Ya, I appreciate any help, but I don't think it is a current problem. When I'm not pulling anybody and it's just two of us in the boat it seems to get up and go good, well come to think of it, it's not as good as before I had to clean the carbs. When you say an ignition problem, do you mean when there is a load and I give it gas it's cutting ignition to a cylinder? or no spark anytime? I have checked the spark when parked at the dock and there is spark to both. Would rebuilding the fuel pump do anything? or cleaning it out? Or should I do a total rebuild of the carbs? Also, what am I going to find when I open up that pump cover? I hate opening things up for the first time only to have a important piece fly out and land in the water or something.

Like I said before, I really appreciate the help.

check your compression, may have a weak cylinder. but, i'm really betting you did not remove the high speed jets and clean them, special screwdriver required. and the reassembly with a rebuild kit.
