I have a mid 1980's vintage Evinrude 115hp V4 on a Glastron CVX16 that is in really excellent condition. It starts and runs like a dream.

The problem is that every once in a while it stalls at speed, typically when pulling a skier or cruising at above 30mph. It can go a weekend or several without any trouble, and then show up unexpectedly. I can pull skiers intermittently for two hours with no problems at all, or I can be pulling the first skier for 15min and have the problem show up. It stalls out and loses all power. Sometimes the motor kills, and sometimes it just revs down to idle and can not be revved up again (or else it kills). It does not seem to matter how much fuel is in the tank.

Because the problem is so intermittent, I don't believe it is overheating. My guess is that it is not getting fuel, but I may be wrong. I have cleaned the fuel filter, replaced all the flexible parts of the fuel line, and all the fuel delivery hoses inside the motor. I have cleaned the carbuerator, and I replace the spark plugs every year. I have siphoned all the fuel out of the tank at the beginning of the season for the last two years, and started fresh with brand new premium fuel. Prior to that I tried adding heet and similar fuel drying additives to no avail.

It has been doing this off and on for five years, and I can not seem to get to the bottom of the problem. Hopefully someone else out there has some ideas.

if you have a built in tank, check your vent hose. i was also thinking water, but you seem to have ruled that out. do you have a fuel/water separator?

Thanks for the reply. I do check the vent hose every Spring and make sure it is clear. I do not have a fuel/water separator. I thought it might be water in the fuel for a while, because it has a huge metal fuel tank, and it does sit for weeks in between uses sometimes.

I ruled that out this year because it stalled out the first time I took it out, with a 3/4 full tank of brand new fuel.

It seems intermittent enough to try replacing the anti-siphon check valve in the fuel pickup.
