Points to Electronic..lost tach at idle

Switched out the old points Mallory Flatcap to Prestolite Electronic. (VP 280..350 GM). No tach at idle, but will kick on when goosed. Seems at times to spike when it warms a little. Not in the water yet. Original 1977 Tach, nothing done but bypassed the ballast resistor for the full 12+ volts. Tach wire comes of the coil, and seems like a good connection. Anyone have any ideas? Like the tach is designed for 9 volts when running with the point system? Has me stumped..

Yea, that's normal. Had to do the samething when I went to the Prestolite from points.
Need a new (Modern) tach.

Thanks Don...I was ready to bite the bullet on trying a new one, as everything works well.
