I have a 1981 Caravelle 198 with a Mercruizer 260 hp V-8. It will not shut off with the key. Also, when the key is off, my dash guages are still on but dim and the coil is still energized. When I turn the switch to run, the guages light up like normal. I have replaced the ignition switch and solenoid. Any idaes????

Thanks, David

Re: mercruiser ignition problem

sounds like the alt. is backfeeding the system. Have you had work done to the alt? accidently hooked the batteries up backwards? alt. may be bad.
remove the heavy orange wire from the alt. and retest.

Re: mercruiser ignition problem

Thanks. I tried the orange wire but it still did the same thing but I found that if I removed the wires off of the positive side of the coil, the problem stopped. Do you thind a shorted coil or maybe grounded points? I would think if that was the case, it wouldn't run but it does. Please advise. Thanks

You've probably got a bad ground somewhere.

is it possible that the wire going from the starter to the positive side of the coil is hot all the time. Try unhooking just it and leave the + wire from the ign switch to the coil hooked up.
