I salvaged a Johnson outboard, and need to know what year and horsepower
the motor is. I would like to repair and use this motor, as it is in pretty good shape. I have a Model RKL 30 A Serial # J2976823
this model has electric shift which I have never seen before ! is this a proven
reliable system?

That's a 1968 40 HP. It was reliable in it's time and many are still in use today...

Re: need info on johnson outboard.

Tons of Electric shift motors were built and they are a good reliable system. They are also badmouthed by a lot of people. Take your pick of opinions. Most shops won't work on them, some just because they are "too old" and some because they don't have the special tools, and some are just too ignorant to know how to do it.

It does require special oil in the lower unit, BRP (Johnson/Evinrude) Premium Blend.

I hope you got the remote control and wiring harness with it. A new shift switch in the control costs more than the whole rest of motor is worth.

Re: need info on johnson outboard.

Thanks Guys!

I have the wire harness, but no control box or switch. I would assume this motor cannot be converted to a tiller. any idea were to look for control box
and switch for this motor. and can I at least get this motor wired up to test run, I have no idea if it will run. it turns over so i know it's not frozen up.
i jumped the starter and it works, but need to wire in the ignition. there are eight wires plus two 4 gage wires, blue and red. I could buy a manuel for
it but if it won't run or work out I don't want to waste the money.

Thanks.
