Necessary to paint carb after rebuild?

I'm about to rebuild my 2bbl mercarb off my 3.7L 1988 stingray.
Is it necessary or wise to paint it after the soak/re-assembly?
reason I ask is that the paint on there now is crusty/gummy, and comes off like cheap fingernail polish. Do marine carbs need to be painted?

Nothing has to be painted. The engine doesn't have to be painted, your car doesn't have to be painted. But then things would corrode wouldn't they. The paint is to protect the metal.

If you strip it completely, it will corrode after a little while (a year or two). MUCH faster if it is a salt water environment.

I repainted mine... that GUMOUT spray does nasty things to the paint.

paint it man......its cheap,easy and helps yea....plus it looks kooler! lol

My Merc 260 with a Quadrajet hasn't had any paint on it the 10 years I've ran it.It is used in freshwater only and I've never had one problem with it.

The paint is to actually make it run cooler, according to the factory, but Ive run them without paint, they look good just with bare metal
