I just took off the whole front end of my 170 down to the cam gears. The seals are deffinatly shot and water was deffinatly getting into my oil pan. The cam is grooved. I was told i can get some speedy sleeves for it. My question is what if I dont get any speedy sleeves and i just put the fresh seals on it. WIll it leak? Or will it work but not as long as if i did the sleeves. Basically are the sleeves 100% necessary?

Howdy MC...

You need to do the Speedy sleeve thing. You might be able to get them at NAPA if you can't find them anywhere else.

Here's a link that'll walk you through the repair job.

Also, if you Google - Breezeworks - there's a great forum there for '470/Merc' owners that'll help you get the most out of your little 4-banger monster.

Good Luck!
