Default mercury inline 6, 150hp, won't start unless

Im new to boat... got a luck 19' with trailer and a mercury 150hp inline 6.
The motor won't start unless i remove the spark plug and spray gas in the hole.
And then the motor is good for a few stop and go without spraying again. I've
paid 500 for the whole thing is it a good deal or not.

Is fuel making it to the cylinders? Does your primer bulb firm up after squeezing. Does your enricher valve work when choking? It sounds like a fuel pump rebuild is definitely in order at the very least. Probably also looking at a card rebuild. Are you spraying in a mixture of gasoline and oil- hopefully! Someone will also inevitably tell you to replace the water impeller. Overall, sounds like $500 well spent.

and it seems to be a hell of a job to them off is there a way to clean that faster
or just by removing a few things.... oh by the way thanks for the quick reply.

I would go on mercurypartsexpress.com and order a Fuel pump rebuild kit (usually around $10-15 bucks). Quite easy to do as long as you follow the instructions carefully, a lot of little check valves and gaskets. I would also look for varnish/ green tinge in the drainage bolts on the base of the carbs. If this is present, would get a carb rebuild kit for each carb. What year is this engine??

First order of business is determining the exact year of your motor. There are links on here to determine the year based on your serial number. Then you need the mercury service manual. The fuel pump can be found by following your gasline under the engine cowl and looking for the box it goes into (that's the pump, usually square shaped) with fuel inflow/ outflow then an inline fuel filter afterwards.

OK, just a silly question before you start tearing stuff apart, what's your starting drill?

What it should be for one of these old Beasts is, first you pump HARD on the primer bulb until it's firm and likely has blown a bit of fuel past the needle seats in the carbs. In the Old Old days, my old M1000 liked to be "primed" in this manner until fuel ran out the carbs then it would start right up!

Then, pull the Fast Idle lever all the way up, or if you have the type of control box with a button in the middle, press in the button and give it some Neutral Throttle.

Then, holding the choke button down (or in newer boxes, pushing in on the key to choke), crank over the starter until the motor lights off. Don't let off the choke until she fires. Then, release the choke button and if the motor wants to die off, give choke until it runs relatively smoothly and you can back down on the fast idle lever.

There are a lot of things that can be out of 'whack' and you'll have a hard time starting. Do the Clams Canino Link 'n Synch (search this forum and you'll find it). This'll also ensure you don't have too much spark advance (which will fry your pistons!).

Make sure the idle mixture on each carb is set a bit on the rich side, as a lean mixture will make the motor a real Bugger to start.

Ensure your choke shutters (if you have those) are closing fully; if they are warped, out of adjustment, or not closing all the way, the motor probably won't ever start.

Last ditch, install a primer system, this'll spray fuel/oil mix into the carbs and guarantee a rapid lite-off.

HTH & G'luck..........ed
