Default Mercury 25 Gas Tank Connection

Hi,

I have a 2005 25 Merc - can I direct connect the fuel line to the gas tank? I don't like the old style quick disconnect that connects the fuel line to the tank. Also, can I shorten the fuel line - does it make any difference - probably a stupid question but I'm kinda new at this stuff.

Thanks
