85 Hp mercury outboard throttle problem

Im posting for a good buddy of mine. He has an 85 hp mercury outboard that wont throttle up properly. When the controller is pushed forward the shifter will engage but the throttle cable wont move until the very end of the controllers path forward, and wont hardly throttle up at that. We removed the throttle cable off the engine and it moves easily and doesnt have a problem when the controller is being operated. Any ideas what may be wrong, we have tried adjusting the thorttle cable forward and back, and nothing seems to make a difference....of course neither of us have too much experience. Any help would be appreciated, thanks

It's a little diffacult to say not knowing the control box used or the year of the engine but I would think it's a box problem, without the engine running advance the throttle at the box and see that the engine goes wide open to ck it

Its a 1977 mercury controller and motor. The controller wont cause the motor to go wide open. We replaced the the cam associated with the shifter, perhaps we need to replace the came on the throttle side too. Is the cams wearing out a common problem with old mercury controllers?

The cams do wear. Also you should check the cables. They sometimes get a little kink or rust.Make sure the control is reassembled correctly.
Also the shift cable is the first to move, followed by the throttle cable. Make sure this is how they are connected at the motor.
