I am a recent owner of a 72 Newman/78 evinrude 70 hp boat looking to replace the steering wheel. I finally got the steering wheel off via a wheel puller. However, I cannot seem to find a steering wheel to replace it. I checked the local auto store but their steering wheels and kits do not match. Are steering wheels for boats different in attaching to the shaft, than cars?

Yup. Car stering wheels are splined. Boat steering wheels are tapered with a key. click me

The first one on the page is the one I bought. It not only fit on the old steering shaft in my 60's boat but it also fit on the shaft of the brand new teleflex steering system I installed this year. So I can say they are reasonably universal.

Most steering wheels are for a 3/4" tapered shaft. Beyond that, it's like buying shoes - pick the style you like.
