OK, I am new to this forum and new to boats. I know very little about boat motors. I recently aquired my first boat, a 1977 Evinrude 55 HP on a 16 ft fiberglass tri-hull. The engine starts up and runs fine. As soon as I move the trottle forward and it engages in drive it spits and sputters. As I give it more throttle it continues to spit and sputter then will either suddenly catch and take off, or it will bog down and stall out.

I just replaced the plugs and it makes no difference. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what I can try. Is there some kind of magical adjustment or tune that will fix my problem, or am I going to have to start replacing parts?

ny first advice is to go to this site, http://www.kencook.com/evinrudejohnsonmanuals/ and get the correct number for the proper manual for your engine. buy there or search ebay for one. sounds like the engine has sat with gas in the carbs, and they are varnished up, and need to be cleaned, and rebuilt, this is covered in the manual. before you balk at buying the manual, remember $80 per hour at the shop. also read this:

Where would one get the kit to rebuild the carb? Online, or find a local dealer?

Do the manuals have trouble shooting sections in them in-case the carb needing cleaning is not the problem?

you can clik evinrude parts at the top of the page and order right there. yes, the manual, has trouble shooting. and you can always as right here. you also need the special tool to remove the fixed jets to clean them you can get one from a dealer, or make your own, from a quality screwdriver. this picture is courtesy of our friend FR. http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s...g?t=1177353186
