coupler?

Got out today and the boat ran fine. However, I noticed when I was turning hard to pick up a fallen skier I got a real strong rubber burning smell. I am pretty sure it's the coupler, but it only did it on a hard turn. Going straight down the lake I never smelled it. Could it be a bad gimble since it's only doing it on the turns? 1972 120 hp Mercruiser with aftermarket drive.

Re: coupler?

Hard to say....
The thing to do would be to pull the drive & check the alignment with an alignment tool.....
Burning rubber smell is never good on a boat.....;)

Re: coupler?

If it was the coupler, I doubt you would have been able to get back on plane again without the coupler slipping. Once they start going bad, it's a very quick process before the don't work at all.
Has the impeller in the drive been changed lately? Has the exhaust manifold and riser felt hotter than normal. Could be the exhaust hoses starting to burn thru from lack of water.

Re: coupler?

the outdrive was new last year and I didn't change the impeller this year, I don't see the heat gauge rising.
