Yamaha F50 Lower Unit Shift Problems

I recently had the forward & reverse gear pack up in my lower unit. I replaced them along with all roller bearings, race'es and needle bearings. after reassembling it it won't shift into neutral it goes directly from forward to reverse. When I reinstalled the new race's I reinstalled the shims that were in place behind the old races.
If anyone has any helpful input I would appreciate it.

did u put the shift shaft back right, the cam fits a couple of ways

I never removed the shift cam, it seems to turn fine..

Did you reinstall the gear case with both the gearcase and shifter in neutral?

Ray,

that's the problem, when I try to set the gearcase to neutral it won't shift to neutral, it shifts directly from forward to reverse. If you hold it in between forward and reverse it does freewheel, but it won't stay there it just jumps from forward to reverse when you let the splined shifter shaft go.

Thanks for the help, I found out that I was a little rusty at finding neutral. Lower unit is installed and working great, Thanks.
