Oil leak

I've got a 1999 4.3 ltr. mercruiser. 2 summers in a row, it has lost oil pressure and died on the lake. Both times it has emptied all the oil into the bilge and both times I've had to be towed in. The mechanic I used says it is a design flaw in the oil sending unit. It apparently is a brass or aluminum fitting that doesn't have the strength to support the weight that is put on it. I'm not completely sure what the piece is called, all I know is that 2 summers in a row I have been stuck wih a $110 bill and loss of use for a couple weekends. If anyone has had this same problem and has a solution I would greatly appreciate any help.

Re: Oil leak

No, it is not a common problem and I have seen these tees on many Merc engines, and as I recall, the tee fitting is steel not brass or aluminum.
Is your mechanic using the proper Merc parts, or just some brass or aluminum plumbing hardware from the local hardware store?
