you need to purchase a multi-meter. invaluable. priceless. its a must if you want to troubleshoot electrical. i'm an electrician and without my multimeter i wouldn't have figured out why my amplifier wouldn't turn on!!!!
it will save you $$$$ in the long haul. or just pay the man.. he'll bent you over, though! solid multimeter at sears for $19.99 ac/dc/resistance (ohms) if you own a boat, it's a must have!!! sometimes start-up voltage is necessary, so if you have too many devices piggy-backed to your ground (black on the battery) you will not have adaquite voltage for some of your applications. sort of like a motor that requires more startup voltage than to run a motor. you will get the necessary voltage if you run a hot to the battery and a ground the same way with no interruptions. always use an in-line fuse to make sure not to damage your equipment or start a fire or worse, explosion.
