Today I went to replace my tachomoter that had not been working for some time and while I was installing the new one I turned the battery switch off while I ran the gas out of the carbs. It was a stupid mistake, but when i did this the tach sparked and filled with smoke. The engine ran smoothly until running all of the gas out. When i went to fire it up again, i came to find out that i no longer have power to ignition and tilt. I am guessing that by cutting the battery off it burnt up some wiring since the alternator was still charging. Where do I start!! The engine is a 1987 Evinrude 60 vro. I am new to the forum and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the quick response! Are you talking about a fuse inside the motor itself or in the side panel throttle box. As i'm sure you can tell i am new to outboard motor repair. If you could elaborate a little more it would be great. When i turned the battery switch off, I thought i was just turning it off to the instruments and that it would not bother anything. I thought the battery would just continue to charge. Do you know anything about that?
