My 60HP Johnson normally starts fine, runs great. Following cold start, the engine idles >2000 RPM, then after a few minutes drops to 1200+. When switched into gear, it runs at 900 RPM.

Is there a difference in idle speed in neutral, and idle speed in gear? I realize that regardless, my idle RPMs are too high. What should I be doing?

adjust the idle stop screw. not recommend to rev out of gear above 1500. should idle in gear in the water at 650 -700. faster and you can damage the gear box in the lower, whe shifting. yes there is a difference idle has no load, and will idle a little higher in gear, in gear it has a load, it's turning to prop.
