Default 150HP Mariner Dies once on plane

I have recently just purchased a 1995 Fish and Ski boat with a 150HP Mariner. The engine was just rebuilt prior to me purchasing the boat. Part of the purchase agreement I had a mechanic look the motor over to verify that the rebuild was good. He stated that the compression in all cylinders was around 120-125. His also check the carburetors and said there was a good flow of fuel to each. Based on his results I did some cosmetic work on the boat to get it ready for the water. A week ago I hit the water with it for the first time and the motor ran great!!!!!!
Now for the downside. This weekend (had the whole family of course) I hit the water and the engine cranked up fine. Pulled away from the dock and gave it some gas. It ran out fine and got up on plane. After being on plane for about 100-150 yards the motor sputtered and lost power. Within another couple of seconds it sputtered again and the motor would die. It would crank back up and a couple of minutes. Once it cranked back up and got back on plane the same thing would happen again. It did this consistently about 8 times. I tried running at a slower speed and it ran fine for a longer period of time but it would eventually sputter and die. When I would just idle around in gear it did fine.
Any Help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

sounds like a low fuel issue. most common cause would be tank vent not open enough so it can suck some fuel, but not enough to keep it running wide open. old fuel line and or worn line connections. if it starts to die and you pump up the primer bulb and it picks up again, you've narrowed it down. next choice would be faulty fuel pump.

I chased this bug for a month on my XR4. Main culprit turned out to be an aftermarket plastic bayonet connector the "mechanic" installed.

I chit canned the whole bayonet connector and ran the line direct to the oil mixer.

If someone can pump the primer bulb while you're having trouble, and it helps, you're onto it.

hope it helps
John

Thanks for the quick responses. I will try to get it to the water this weekend and pump the bulb to see what happens.
Thanks

My 135 Merc doing similar thing. Got it home from the lake, found that the new (very flexible) fuel line I had installed was bending and kinking somewhat.
