Exclamation my 93 bayliner has a leak in it.....

Hi guys I am new to this forum, and hope to learn from the best! I have a 93 capri bayliner and I have just noticed That when I travel at a 30mph -40mph cruising speed I get water coming in from just under the drivers side dashboard to the left under the steering wheel. I have also noticed that when I make a sharp right at times it comes in faster.....Anyone have suggestions? I can't see any (holes) in the boat. Thanks. Bart

Look at the underside of your rubrail. If there are any missing pieces of sealant it will cause water to enter. Most all FRP boats are made in two pieces - top and bottom - and joined underneath the rubrail with screws. If the sealant is missing or a couple of screws have worked thenselves loose then you will have that problem. A proper fix would be to remove your rubrail and check all the screws then rebed the entire thing making certain that the two "caps" are sealed as well. Not a difficult project at all. Just use some good sealant - not silicone - and snug the screws. Replace the rubrail and rebed - drink a cold beverage of your choice and admire your handywork.

Thanks....!!! Now would my speedo not working at the same time as this be co-insidental?

No, your speedometer is in no way connected to or affected by your other problem. Usually if you blow some air back through the system it might dislodge anything that could be blocking your water flow - if it is a pitot system.

Hoobs,

What type of power do you have on your boat? I have a 91' Capri with a Merc Alpha one and my speedo wasn't working. Turns out, the speedo was operated by some sort of feature in the outdrive. After further examination, I noticed a hose hanging loose under the outdrive up near the stearn of the boat. I is difficult to picture from describing it - but if you need help locating it, I can get a photo.

Sean

So you have a pitot system. That rubber hose will run from the speedo on your dash to the pickup tube on your transom. The pressure of the water is what gives you a relative M.P.H. They are not really accurate to a degree but better than nothing I guess. Take that hose and cut off about 1/4 to 1/2 inch - if you have the room. Replace it on the speedo ( there will be a hose pick up on it - a male adaptor ). That will allow the water to push into the unit allowing it to give you M.P.H.

where the hose attaches to the speedo use a plastic zip tie to make sure it is sealed tight on it, that worked for me. Any kinks or tears in that hose will cause it not to work too.
