Default Mariner Ignition Question

I have had some other posts and I am getting close to fixing all the problems from the sinking. I pulled the carbs and cleaned them, replaced a couple of wires that were suspect, replaced the fuel line and went to a portable tank to eliminate fuel problems. I replaced the spark plugs. I fired the boat up and it ran perfect, idled great and was firing on all 6.

I put the cover on the motor, trimmed it up and drove to the boatramp (1 block away) the motor turns over but does not start. I suspect the key switch and I am wondering if there are any wires coming from the engine harness to the switch that would prevent the plugs from getting fire. Is there something that I could be missing? Neighbor tells me to pull the flywheel, I just feel the answer is simpler than that. Please help so I can use my boat this weekend.

If you have a wiring diagram and a multi-meter you can systematically check the various circuits to find your problem, or at least eliminate possible causes. Using a systematic approach to confirm you have 12v where there should be 12v, continuity where there should be continuity, and ground where there should be ground should narrow things down. There are just too many possibilities to guess what the problem may be. The shop manual (Mercury or Seloc) for your motor should have a section on troubleshooting electrical.

I would suspect the ignition system is corroding away- either the trigger or switch box may be failing. You'll probably need to pull the flywheel in the end- a 5-10minute job with the right tool. I wouldn't go on any far offshore adventures unless you have an entire boatload full of electrical components.

Cool Re: Mariner Ignition Question

If that motor was under saltwater, it likely needs to be disassembled to get the silt and other grit out of the bearings. Also, it is quite possible all the electronics will eventually fail. If you post a year and HP. we could give you a few points to check out.
