Default '77 mercury 4hp cooling

Hi everyone,

Just bought a '77 merc 4hp kicker. It runs great. My question is...how much water should come out of the exhaust while it is running. Now just a little sprays out through approx. 6 holes. Is this normal? After an hour the cover gets fairly hot however the engine runs fine.

I would think if the cover is hot, then the engine must be hotter, and that can't be a good thing. May be time to get the impeller changed.
