i just bought an 89 celebrity with a merc v8 and outdrive. boat runs great, but the tilt/trim goes painfully slow on the way up...goes down just fine. it is so slow, you can't hardly see it move when it goes up. literally takes 15 minutes to get it up high enough to get it out of the water....any suggestions?

check the oil level. Sometimes its as easy as adding oil to get it going correctly. If that does not work I'm sure someone more knowledgable than me will chime in,

the pump seems to be running the correct speed, sounds the same in the up direction as it does in the down direction. and the fluid reservoir seems to be full...

It shouldn't really be running the same in both directions. Going down is a little faster (because it easier on the pump to go down), going up should be a little slower with more torque. If it running fast it must some internal leaking issues.

I think he was talking more of an internal leak (bypassing) fluid past the pump or valves in the pump.

Go all the way down to the bottom of the page - there will be an idex, you can click on the topics and it will take you there.

Re: Tilt is EXTREMELY slow on the way up....

ok, i think i have the problem figured out. i got looking in the reservoir, and there was this white goo that had settled on the bottom. it is VERY thick, and this would explain why the tilt is very slow on the way up. so i sucked as much of it out as i could, filled it up with fluid, mixed it up, sucked that back out, filled it up again, and tried the tilt. it made a big difference, but it's nowhere near the speed that it should be. i am thinking that i need to take it all apart and clean it out very good, and then refill it and start over.

my question is, how do i bleed the air out of that system after i put it back together? and is there anything that i need to be careful of when i am doing this?

It's self bleeding, just run it up and down a few times.

That white goo, is from water. Possibly a cylinder leaking?????

cylinder leaking??? how do i determine that? could it just be that the fluid has not been changed in YEARS???

I gave you the link to the manual, it explains in detail how to test them.

Anything is possible, was the oil a milky white or tan color?

Sorry, i am having trouble with that manual. there are no links to anything. i can only go back to the master table of contents....and it is a milky white thick goo. i checked with a friend that owns a marina, he confirms that it is indeed from water, he seems to think that i might have a loose connection in one of the lines...
