Hi guys,
I am only new to this site and it seems great.
I have been reading through your post looking for info on a johnson 25hp dog clutch slipping.
My mechanic says it will cost between $300 and 650 to repair.:(
When i am on the water it slips when the revs are powered up when idling it doesn't do it.
It has slipped that bad it snapped my shear pin in 3 pieces.
Where is the dog clutch and how hard is it to inspect it.
What should i be looking for.
Any info is appreciated guys.
thanx

Re: 77 seahorse 25hp clutch slipping

Welcome to iboats. :)

Go to johnson.com and navigate through Parts and Accessories to Literature and you'll find Engine Diagrams. Find your motor and print out the gearcase page(s). The shifter is on the propshaft between the forward and reverse gears. There are cogs on each end of it that engage the gears. They round-off and that's what makes them pop out of gear. It probably needs to be replaced. Problem is, the mating cogs on the gear are probably also rounded off and it also probably has to be replaced. You can't get just a forward gear anymore. You get a kit with all sorts of stuff that upgrades the assembly so it hopefully never happens again. That's why the high price. I thought it would be more. You'll need a manual to attack this yourself. You can order one here from iboats, or you can probably borrow one from your public library.
