Sea King info

I am a total newbie at boating so forgive my ignorance.
I just bought my first boat and it came with a Montgomery Ward Sea King.

We started it in the driveway, and it ran.
I live on a lake, and it came with 3 gallons of pre mixed fuel sooooo.
We took it out, first it is had as all get out to start.
Once running, it runs like it's bogged down.
Every once in awile (every 3 - 5 mins) we feel a solid "pop" from the engine.
Could this be a transmission issue?
Can I get it to start better? (I'm a truck mechanic)
What is the proper fuel mixture (i.e. 1 gallon to mix oil)
What are the suggested octanes and mix oils?
It did ok for about a hal-hour today until we throttled it up, then it stalled and smoked up. It didn't lock the engine, but wouldn't start again.
Should I ditch it and buy a new outboard or work with it (it seems relatively well taken care of).
BTW, this boat is mounted to a 16ft 1965 seville
Is there an equivalent model I can get maintenace information from?

Your motor is a 1960 35hp, manual start. Made by Gale Products Division of OMC and cousin to the other OMC motors, Evinrude and Johnson. Actually the same motor with different hood. The Gale model # is 35D13.

So, you have a good motor as it was produced new. By now it has bad (cracked) coils unless they have already been replaced. No doubt about it, all those old OMC motors have the same problem. That is why it was hard to start and bogging down and won't restart.

Fuel mix is 24:1 or 1 qt TC-W3 certified outboard oil to 6 gallons of regular unleaded gas. Some people will tell you that you can run less oil, and that might be true but that is your decision. It does have all needle and roller bearings.

Now, the "popping". Did it feel like you kept running over a log? That is the usual description of a motor jumping out of gear, turning 1/2 revolution and slamming back into gear. Backfiring or sneezing at idle is caused by a lean conditon--carb adjustment or dirty.

The jumping out of gear is a very common thing. It is due to a worn out clutch dog and forward gear in the lower unit. Replacing them is the cure. Read $$$$. 90% of the time, the gear is worn as bad as the dog, so just doing one is bad economy. But if I am not mistaken, on that one you can swap the forward and reverse gears by swapping the bushings in them, if the reverse is serviceable.

To sum up, they are good motors, but this one needs work. Or you can spend several grand and buy a new one.
