Johnson 3hp Sea Horse:
JW-17
B41504
Year?
Made in Belgium. It's kind of an off white. I really like it.
This was a freebee and was siezed up. Marvel Mystery oil and some pursuasion freed it up after couple of days but it shows 65lbs compression per cylinder. Is that anywhere in the ball park?
The ignition all looks new and this was suppossedly a well maintained engine until it was layed up 3 years ago.
After cleaning the carb which was rusty outside but clean inside, it started first pull but stops running after about 10 seconds. The cork float was fine and set correctly. The air intake is not plugged up. I used 2 cycle oil and followed the mix ratio printed on the engine cover.
It will only start and run with the choke out. I messed up the H/L settings removing the carb but have them set L: turn and a half out from seated. H: 3/4 turn out. You set them from the seats and then get the knobs in the middle of the range so it has about a half turn of adjustment either way?
Also, there is almost no H20 coming out of the water exhaust. It's just kind of a mist. Some of the holes look plugged and the cover screw won't come out yet. The head is pretty hot when you touch it.
Any ideas on how to get it running smooth.
Thanks and keep up the good work, p.
