Can anybody tell me the difference between Mercruiser 170 and Mercruiser 470.
Don't they both have 170hp?

The engine are the same basic motor, as bondo mentions, the 470 was used between 76 and 79, while the 170 was used in 85 and 86. While the engines are both 3.7L alum. block, cast iron 460 Ford head, there were changes in the manifolds (intake and exhaust) and changes in the cooling system, and differences in the charging system.

Thank you!

I've been looking at a boat from 1986 with mercruiser 470. Does this mean that the engine is older than the boat?

It's possible, worse things have happened to 20 year old boats when confronted with an owner that wanted to make it go with the least amount of expense.

Oh, I donno. Ive had my 170 for 4 seasons, and the engine was the only thing I havent had to work on yet. The closest problems were a cracked carb housing, and freshening up the outdrive.
Still runs like a top, even when I bought it with water in the oil. (changed the oil twice, and not a water problem since)

The 470 was in use until at least '83 I think. Mine is an 81.
