Old Mercury 35 hp and Mercontrol problems

Hi all,

i have an older (maybe 1967?) Mercury outboard with a Mercontrol controller unit. I can't get it into nuetral - or at least the prop turns when I pull it no matter what I do. The Mercontrol used to be stuck, so I opened it, greased it all up, and put it back together, and it moved fine - until I put it into reverse then it stuck again.

Anyway - can one purchase a new Mercontrol unit anymore? And/or anyone know of any reputable repair places in Seattle; and how much might it cost to get something like that fixed.

Thanks!

Good shot it might be the lower unit...

disconnect the cable at the engine, and shift manually, while turning the prop with your foot. sounds like bad cable.

I doubt it is the control box. More than likely someone has had the lower unit off and didn't align the shift rod correctly. Merc lower units are spring loaded into forward gear so unless both the upper and lower shift rods are correctly aligned, the units will default to forward and will be difficult, if not impossible, to shift into anything but forward. Drop the unit and go from there...

Cool thank you for the advice!

So I MAY not have to buy a whole new lower unit then?

Sweet - since I doubt I could afford that and I don't think the boat is even worth it!

Thanks again - I'll post again once I get that far.
